SYRACUSE’S ROAD TO TEMPE:
The Orange received an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history this season. This is the third straight year the Orange has appeared in the tournament and just the second time in its history SU has reached the 40-win plateau. SU is 12-9 this season against NCAA Tournament qualifiers.
Its 17 BIG EAST Conference victories was the most league wins the Orange has ever achieved. Syracuse is led into the tournament by First Team All-BIG EAST performers Stephanie Watts and Veronica Grant, along with all-conference pitchers Jenna Caira and Stacy Kuwik.
The Orange pitching staff has been a consistent force all season. SU ranks 19th nationally in ERA, while Caira and Kuwik boast a 1.56 and a 1.58 ERA, respectively. At the plate, the Orange has been in the top 20 all season for home runs per game average. This week SU checks in at No. 16 with a 1.17 average.
SCOUTING THE FIELD:
Arizona State – Pac-12 – 46-7: Arizona State, the defending National Champions, is the No. 3 overall seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The Sun Devils defeated Florida last season in Oklahoma City for the university’s second national title.
Ten Sun Devils were recognized by the Pac-12, led by first-team performers Katelyn Boyd, Dallas Escobedo, Alix Johnson and Annie Lockwood. Escobedo, a sophomore pitcher, led the Sun Devils to the national title a season ago as a freshman and has a 20-4 record this season. Fellow pitcher Hillary Bach is 19-1 overall with a 1.68 ERA.

Four LBSU players bat over .300, led by Hannah De Gaetano who hit .337 in the regular-season. She and Shayna Kimbrough are the only two student-athletes on the team to play in and start all 51 games. 22 Orange Heading To NCAA East Prelims
Men’s Field | Women’s Field
INDIANAPOLIS –
“We are very pleased with our qualifiers,” said head coach Chris Fox. “We have some legitimate national contenders, like Jarret Eaton and Katie Hursey, and some young people who will get their first chance to participate at this level.”
The women’s field is led by 10,000-meter conference champion Sarah Pagano, who defeated the BIG EAST field by seven seconds two weeks ago in Tampa, Fla. with a time of 34:37.94. Pagano’s season and personal best time of 33:45.05, a time she set at the Stanford Invitational, is the 23rd quickest time in the nation this season and seventh fastest in the east region. Jessie Petersen, who earned entry after her second place finish at the Penn Relays (35:25.78), will also compete in the event.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase consists of five Orange distance runners, including senior Heather Stephens, who owns the region’s 11th fastest time in the event (10:11.51; Stanford Invitational. She is joined by school record holder Hursey, Natalie Busby, Erin Cawley and Rebekah MacKay. Hursey is no stranger to national level competition. Last season, she set the school record at the NCAA East Preliminary’s to advance to the NCAA Championship.
Lauren Penney and Brenna Symoniak are two of 15 BIG EAST representatives in the women’s 5,000-meter run. Penney is currently 19th in the east with a time of 16:16.07, set at the Larry Ellis Invitational, while Symoniak is 43rd (16:37.07). Rounding out the women’s field are senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong in the 100-meter dash and SaDe Lewis in the 100-meter hurdles. Owusu-Agyapong finished second at the conference championship at 11.49 seconds, a time that is 21st in the region while Lewis’ top time of 13.71 seconds was set in the preliminaries of BIG EAST competition, and is 45th in the region.
On the men’s side, Eaton, the 2012 outdoor conference champion, headlines the field in the 110-meter hurdles. The owner of the conference’s top time in the event (13.47 seconds; BIG EAST prelims) is fourth in the region, and he will race against the likes of Devon Hill (Miami) Spencer Adams (Clemson) and Barrett Nugent (LSU), all of who he defeated in the NCAA Indoor 60-meter Championship earlier this season. Amadou Gueye, who finished fifth at BIG EAST and Matthew Callanan will also compete in the 110-meter hurdles.
Jaquan Holland finished third in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the conference championships, and will represent SU in the same events next weekend. Holland owns the team’s top four times in both events, including BIG EAST times of 10.33 and 20.87 seconds, respectively.

Cuse Classic: Orange Secures School’s First National Semifinal Appearance
SYRACUSE , N.Y. – Saturday’s game between No. 4 Syracuse and No. 5 North Carolina marks the second time the schools have met in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. In 2008, the Orange defeated the Tar Heels, 13-11, to advance to the national semifinals for the first time in school history.
In a tight game that featured four ties, North Carolina broke a 9-9 tie, taking its first lead of the game on Megan Bosica’s third goal of the contest with 9:50 remaining. Following an SU timeout, Katie Rowan scored an unassisted goal 45 seconds later to knot the game, and then fed Halley Quillinan for a goal that put Syracuse ahead for good with 8:30 on the clock.
Syracuse increased its lead when Megan Mosenson converted a pass from Rowan, before the Tar Heels again cut the lead to one on Bosica’s fourth goal of the game. The Orange clinched the victory when freshman goalkeeper Liz Hogan threw a clearing pass 55 yards to Jackie DePetris who scored an open-net goal with 55 seconds remaining for the 13-11 final.
Christina Dove was a sophomore on the 2008 squad. She ranked second on the team in scoring that season with 100 points, five of which came in the historic win against North Carolina.
“It was such special game for our team that year and for the program in general,” Dove said. “It was the first time the program made it to the Final Four, which was such a turning point in Syracuse lacrosse history.”
Head coach Gary Gait was in his first season at the helm of the Orange program in 2008. He guided Syracuse to a record-setting year as SU won a school-record 18 games and claimed the program’s first outright BIG EAST regular-season title. The Orange also won the BIG EAST Tournament for the second consecutive year.
Prior to 2008, Syracuse had won one NCAA Tournament game. The win against North Carolina started the Orange on the most success five-year run in school history. Since 2008, SU has won or shared four BIG EAST regular-season titles, made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the national semifinals twice.
“It was an incredible win for the program,” Gait said. “It just showed what we were capable of doing. To be in that in that elite four, showed the players that they had that ability got them thinking that we should be there every year.”
Tickets for Saturday’s game are $8 for adults and $5 for youth ages 12 and under. Syracuse and North Carolina students can purchase tickets for $5 with a valid school ID. Parking will be available in the Dome West lots for $5.

Veterans Lead SU into NCAA Quarters
No. 4 Syracuse is no stranger to playing in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The Orange will make its fifth appearance in the second round since 2007 when it hosts No. 5 North Carolina on Saturday, May 19 at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
Fourteen members of the current squad were part of the 2010 team that earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and won two road games to make the school’s second appearance in the national semifinals. It’s an experience the upperclassmen remember clearly.
“During that time, it was a really exciting feeling,” senior Janelle Stegeland said. “I think we know what it feels like to get to that level and play with those teams. As a sophomore when we were there it was one of the most exciting experiences I’ve ever had.”
While participating in the NCAA Tournament is nothing new for the upperclassmen, Syracuse’s freshmen and sophomores are playing in the national tournament for the first time. It’s an experience the upperclassmen know can be intimidating.
“I remember freshman year – stepping onto the field, especially in the semifinal game, just being really nervous,” junior Linley Block said. “I think this year we are really prepared and we know what’s like to have that feeling. I hope all the upperclassmen on the team that knows what that feeling is like can help comfort the underclassmen and make them feel really comfortable in this game.”
Tickets for Saturday’s game are $8 for adults and $5 for youth ages 12 and under. Syracuse and North Carolina students can purchase tickets for $5 with a valid school ID. Parking will be available in the Dome West lots for $5.

NCAA Chronicles: Part One
TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore Jasmine Watson and freshman Lindsay Taylor have agreed to be our correspondents during the trip to Tempe, Ariz. for the NCAA Softball Regional. Each day they will do video chats documenting the day’s events leading up to SU’s first game with Long Beach State on Friday.
Today was a travel day for the team, which is always a long day when you fly from the East coast to the West coast. As the team is sorting out plane tickets in Atlanta, SUAthletics.com asked Taylor and Watson what they do on the plane to pass the time.
The team arrived at the hotel in Phoenix at 9:30 p.m. and was greeted by 99 degree weather. The weather will be a hot topic all week, but Taylor and Watson gave us their initial thoughts.
Tomorrow morning the team will be heading to the diamond for practice. Check back with SUAthletics.com for more videos and a photo gallery of practice.

SU Prepares for UNC in NCAA Quarters
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 2 Syracuse will take on No. 5 North Carolina in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, May 19 at 1 p.m. The Orange will be trying to advance to the national semifinals for the third time in the last five years.
With finals and graduation behind them, members of the squad are concentrating solely on lacrosse this week and the challenge they will face against the Tar Heels.
“It’s easier to stay focused and not worry about anything else,” said freshman Devon Collins of this week’s preparations. “It’s a lot easier to give it your all.”
Without classes, the squad has some extra time on its hands. The team is taking advantage of the free time.
“We’re doing a lot of team activities,” senior Sarah Holden said. “This week we have a trip to the zoo. We’ve been doing team tie dying – just some team bonding stuff off the field. We want to continue building relationships on and off the field.”
Holden is one of four team captains who have previously played in the NCAA Tournament. That experience is something that the upperclassmen are happy to share with those who are going through it for the first time in their career.
“Luckily for me and all the rest of seniors, we’ve been in a similar situation before,” Holden said. “We got ot see what those seniors did before to help us when we were underclassmen. We’ve just really developed relationships with them, on and off the field. I think they (underclassmen) are doing a great job and I think they are really focused.”
Tickets for Saturday’s game are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under. Students from Syracuse and North Carolina will be admitted for $5 with a valid ID.

Hall of Fame Calls Monk’s Name
NEW YORK – Following a memorable NFL career that culminated in induction to the Professional Football Hall of Fame, legendary Syracuse wide receiver Art Monk is in the spotlight again. The 1979 All-American is one of 14 players and three coaches who will be inducted into the National Football Foundation (NFF) College Football Hall of Fame.
Monk is the 18th inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame with ties to Syracuse University. The most recent inductee for Syracuse was former coach Dick MacPherson, who was honored in 2009. He also added his name to a distinguished list of Syracuse players to be enshrined in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame, joining Jim Brown, Larry Csonka and Floyd Little.
“Art Monk’s induction is another outstanding achievement in his illustrious career and life,” said Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. “We are so proud of Art as he continues to be a role model for so many. At the same time, Art’s recognition symbolizes the extraordinary history of Syracuse football.”
Of the 4.86 million individuals who have played college football since 1869, only 900 players have earned induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, or less than .0002 percent of those who have played the game during the past 143 years. To be eligible for the ballot, players must have been named a First Team All-American, played their last year of intercollegiate football at least 10 years prior, played within the last 50 years and cannot be currently playing professional football. The candidate’s post-football record as a citizen may also be weighed.
Monk’s All-America campaign in 1979 came in a 7-5 season for the Orange, capped by a 31-7 victory against McNeese State in the Independence Bowl, the first bowl game appearance for Syracuse since 1967.
A current member of the SU Board of Trustees, Monk led SU in receiving from 1977-79, and ranks in a tie for eighth on Syracuse’s career receptions list (102) and eighth on the career receiving yards list (1,644). The winner of the Lambert Trophy as the top college football player in the Eastern U.S. in both his freshman and senior season, he set the Syracuse single-game record with 14 catches against Navy in 1977.
In 1980, the Washington Redskins selected Monk with the 18th overall pick in the NFL Draft. During his 16-year NFL career, Monk played 14 seasons with the Redskins before joining the New York Jets for the 1994 campaign and playing with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995. Monk played for the Redskins Super Bowl XVII, Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI teams. He also won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the team in Super Bowl XVII, but did not play due to injury.
“Art Monk epitomizes the focus in our program – developing the person and then the athlete,” said Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone. “He is an accomplished business executive and community leader who excelled on the football field at Syracuse and in the National Football League. We are excited for Art and his family and appreciate all he has done for Syracuse University.”
Monk finished his 16 NFL seasons with 940 receptions for 12,721 yards and 68 touchdowns, along with 332 rushing yards. Monk’s most noteworthy NFL accomplishment was his record for career receptions (940), broken by Jerry Rice during the final week of 1995, Monk’s last season in the league. He was the first to eclipse 900 receptions and retired with the single season receptions record (106) and the most consecutive games with a catch (183). He was named to the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team and was enshrined in the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
Monk’s success on the gridiron was matched by his performance off the field in founding The Good Samaritan Foundation. The foundation, based on the strong commitment of its founders to “prepare youth for leadership in the community and the workplace,” provides youth with the environment needed to equip them with the skills, training and resources necessary to compete successfully in society through the Student Training Opportunity Program (STOP).
The program serves more than 50 high school students, four days a week during the school year and five days a week during the summer providing after-school programs, tutoring and mentoring. The program uses every opportunity to impart love, wisdom and a nurturing environment for these young people to explore their talents, skills and to realize their dreams.
