SU Finishes Seventh, Ninth At BIG EAST

Jarret Eaton’s meet record time of 7.70 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and Flings Owusu-Agyapong’s winning time of 7.41 in the 60-meter dash highlighted the Syracuse track and field team’s second day of competition at the 2012 BIG EAST Indoor Track Field Championship on Sunday at the Armory. The SU men finished seventh overall while the women placed ninth, and will be back in action on March 3 for the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass. as well as the Columbia Last Chance meet in New York City.

Owusu-Agyapong, still vying for an automatic qualifying time into the NCAA Indoor Championships, beat the field by 0.08 seconds.

Winning the men’s team competition was Georgetown, which defeated Cincinnati 102-90. On the women’s side, Notre Dame ran away with a 25-point victory past Connecticut.

Running against a competitive field, Eaton once again came out on top with a time of 7.70 seconds to take the gold against Cincinnati’s Terrence Somervill and Pitt’s Josh Thompson. Amadou Gueye finished fifth in the event at 8.01 seconds.

Jaquan Holland ran neck and neck with Pittsburgh’s Brycen Spratling in the 200-meter dash before ultimately being edged into a second place finish with a time of 21.46. Holland also ran in the 60-meter dash, finishing third (6.85).

The Orange ran four student-athletes in the men’s 3000-meter run, and was led by Reed Kamyszek’s 12th place finish (8:16.07). Also competing for SU in the event was Tito Medrano (18th; 8:25.64), Corey Robinson (20th; 8:31.00) and Patrick Geoghegan (23rd; 8:43.99).

On the women’s side, Molly Malone’s 2000-meter race was a tight finish as four runners finished within less than a second of each other, with Malone placing second at 2:48.58.

Senior Heather Stephens led a trio of Orange in the 3000-meter run with her second place finish (9:41.33), less than two seconds behind Georgetown’s Emily Infeld’s winning mark. Also running in the 3000 was Erin Cawley (12th; 9:55.55) and Jessie Peterson (15th; 10:05.36). SU placed three runners in the top-ten of the 5000-meter race, highlighted by Lauren Penney’s third place finish of 16:38.31.
