SU Men Second After Day One At BIG EAST

Frank Taylor’s first place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.44-meters have the SU men’s track and field in second place after Day One of the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday at the Armory. The Orange has 28 points, and trail Villanova by just three points. The SU women currently sit in a tie for 11th place with Sunday’s championship heats slated to begin at 8:00 a.m.

In the 5000-meter run, freshman Jace Lowry reached the podium thanks to his third place finish with a time of 14:13.09, narrowly edging teammate Martin Hehir, who finished fourth (14:13.49).

Senior Jarret Eaton and junior Amadou Gueye also reached Sunday’s championship heats in the 60-meter hurdles after he finished third and fourth overall in the preliminaries with times of 7.90 and 8.01 seconds, respectively.

In the 60-meter dash, Jaquan Holland and Darryl White will represent the Orange tomorrow after finishing third (6.85) and fifth (6.83) in Saturday’s preliminary heats. Holland, who also competed in the 200-meter dash, finished second overall in the preliminary races with a time of 21.52 seconds to reach the championship race.

Joseph Whelan, who finished first in the mile run last weekend at the Kane Invitational, finished seventh in the same event, becoming one of 12 student-athletes to reach the championships.

On the women’s side, Flings Owusu-Agyapong finished first in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash at 7.41, edging out Georgetown’s Amanda Kimbers by 0.02 seconds and securing a spot in tomorrow’s championship race.

Meanwhile, senior Lauren Penney clinched the bronze medal in the 5000-meter run, clocking in at 16:38.31, while Molly Malone, who broke the school record in the 800-meter run last weekend, reached the finals of the 1000-meter run with a fifth place finish overall at 2:53.74.
