SU Defeats Texas St. 4-0 in Season Opener

Tempe, Ariz. – Behind a complete game one hit performance by pitcher Stacy Kuwik and a four-run first inning, the Syracuse University softball team (1-0) defeated Texas State (0-1) 4-0 on Friday morning at the Tempe Sports Complex.
Kuwik had seven strikeouts in her complete game and allowed three walks. She tossed 83 pitches. Before Kuwik entered the circle, SU had given her a four run cushion as the Orange bats erupted in the top of the first.
After a leadoff single by Veronica Grant, and a Stephanie Watts walk, Lacey Kohl roped a two-run double to right center field for a 2-0 advantage.
Jasmine Watson then brought Kohl in with a single and advanced to second on the throw home. Emily Thompson would pinch run for Watson and stole third, then cross the plate on an error to provide the Orange its 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats went down 1-2-3 in each of the first two innings, while SU did not allow a Texas State runner past second base the entire game. Kuwik surrendered her only hit of the game in the fourth inning.
Grant and Watson led the Orange with two hits apiece, while Grant also stole two bases.
