Penney, Pagano Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic

Complete List

Syracuse cross country senior Lauren Penney and junior Sarah Pagano are two of 104 female student-athletes from across the nation that were earned United States Track Field and Cross Country All-Academic (USTFCCCA) status on Thursday. Penney earned the honor for the third straight season while Pagano picked up her first career honor.

The BIG EAST had 15 representatives named to the list, which is tied with the Big Ten for the most conference nods in the country. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region’s top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2011.

Penney led the Orange in every race she ran in 2011, earning All-BIG EAST, All-Northeast Region and All-American honors. She finished 29th overall at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. with a time of 20:19 to become Syracuse’s first female All-American in program history.

In the classroom, Penney is a three-time selection to the BIG EAST All-Academic as a history and social studies education major. The Succasunna, N.J. native is also a five-time member of the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Pagano (Ringwood, N.J.) was earned All-Northeast Region status after finishing eighth overall at the 2011 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship in Buffalo this season. She was also named to the All-BIG EAST team after a 14th place finish at the conference championships (20:33).

Pagano is a biochemistry major who has been named to the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester since enrolling at Syracuse in 2009. She has also been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team in each of the past two seasons.
