SYRACUSE, N.Y. –

Despite an early third period goal from Margot Scharfe, the Syracuse ice hockey team (9-17-3, 0-4-3) could not overcome a four-goal second period by Robert Morris as the Colonials (15-8-2, 4-2-1) escaped with a 4-3 win on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. SU received goals from three different scorers, while Kallie Billadeau made 22 saves in goal. The teams will meet tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in SU’s final home game of the season on Senior Day.

After Syracuse led 1-0 after the first period, the Colonial offense exploded for four tallies, including two scores on the power play. RMU was 2-of-7 on the power play for the night and held a 26-16 edge in shots, while SU was 1-of-5 on the man advantage and won 25-of-47 faceoffs.

Kaillie Goodnough would pot her fifth goal of the season midway through the opening period on a shot from the blue line. After receiving a pass from partner Brittney Krebs, Goodnough’s initial shot from the point was blocked by a Robert Morris defender. Goodnough, however, quickly corralled the loose puck and fired another shot towards goal that got through traffic and beat RMU goaltender Kristen DiCiocco (13 saves) for the score.

The Colonials came out of the first intermission with two goals in the first 6:38 of the frame, the first coming from Maddie Collias as she took a feed from Katie Fergus and beat Billadeau on a shot from in tight. Kelsey Thomas followed Collias’ tally with her 11th goal of the season as she sent a shot on goal from the right side that seemed to fool Billadeau before sneaking over the sophomore goaltender’s shoulder.

The Orange would respond and knot the game at two with 11:44 left in the stanza as Holly Carrie-Mattimoe netted her 11th of the season. Nicole Ferrara began the play by skating the puck into the offensive and sending a beautiful cross ice pass over to Carrie-Mattimoe on the right side for a wrist shot into the back of the net.

The Robert Morris power play, which was awarded five attempts on the man advantage during the period, cashed in with 7:23 left in the frame as Jamie Joslin fired a shot from the point to beat Billadeau for her 10th goal of the season. The Colonials would go up by two less than four minutes after the Joslin score as Rebecca Vint hammered home a loose puck after a pile up in the crease.

Scharfe tried to help the Orange mount a comeback in the third period with Syracuse on the power play four minutes into the frame. Caitlin Roach controlled the puck at the point before sending a shot towards goal that was blocked by the defense, but Scharfe was positioned in front of the goal to make a quick turnaround shot past DiCiocco. The Orange would pull Billadeau with 1:03 left in regulation, but could not net the equalizer.
