Hicks Earns NSCA’s Highest Distinction
Syracuse University assistant athletics director for strength performance Will Hicks is now in an elite group. The veteran strength and conditioning coach is one of 22 nationally to have earned Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) and has reached Emeritus (*E) status from the National Strength and Conditioning Associate (NSCA). The recognition is intended to increase awareness among coaches and student-athletes hoping its experts can ensure that student-athletes are maximizing their performance gains through properly developed, scientifically based training programs. The goal of the recognition is to maintain the health and safety of the student-athlete who is lead or supervised by a highly qualified and certified professional.
“The NSCA Registry recognizes strength and conditioning coaches that have experience beyond certification,” said Sr. NSCA Director Coach Boyd Epley. “We are very proud to have Coach Hicks join this registry.”
Hicks joined the Syracuse staff in 2000 as the head strength and conditioning coach was promoted to assistant athletics director in 2007. He has worked with more than 60 student-athletes who have gone on to play professional football, including more than two dozen at Syracuse. The list includes current Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney, a 2006 Super Bowl Champion and seven-time Pro Bowl selection, and David Tyree, a member of the 2007 Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and a 2005 Pro Bowl selection). In 2011, 16 players Hicks mentored at Syracuse were on NFL rosters.
“Coach Hicks has a unique perspective on athletic performance and is trained to recognize mechanical or physiological issues in athletes to efficiently prescribe alternative exercises to obtain the desired performance,” the NSCA press release stated. “While keeping up with the most current research and best practices, Hicks is dedicated to ensuring the safety of young athletes.”
