HAMDEN, Conn. –

Paced by a 38-19 shot advantage, Quinnipiac scored once in the first period and twice in the third to shut out the Syracuse ice hockey team (8-16-3) on Friday night at the TD Bank Sports Center, 3-0. Jenesica Drinkwater made 35 saves in goal, one shy of her career high, while Chelsea Laden made 19 stops and Erica Uden Johansson contributed a goal and two assists for the Bobcats (15-9-2). The teams will square off tomorrow afternoon in the weekend finale at 4:00 p.m.

Syracuse was 0-for-3 on the power play against the Bobcats, who have taken the fewest penalties in the nation this season. Quinnipiac was 0-for-3 on the man advantage as the Orange, which had the least amount of penalties since Dec. 2 against Lindenwood.

“We struggled through the first period, but Drinkwater kept us in there,” head coach Paul Flanagan said. “Then we played a solid second but couldn’t muster up enough offense to match their effort in the third period.”

Quinnipiac set the tone offensively in the first period, holding 12-5 edge in shots and potting the game’s first goal midway through the frame. After the Bobcats opened the game with five straight shots on Drinkwater, Uden Johansson scored her fifth goal of the season after receiving a feed from Breann Frykas and beating the Syracuse netminder for the score.

Syracuse began to piece together offensive chances midway through the second period with heavy pressure in the QU zone, but the Orange could not solve Laden, who made all seven saves in the middle stanza. Drinkwater would keep SU in the game with nine saves, including four while Syracuse was shorthanded.

Quinnipiac would pepper Drinkwater consistently during the third period with 17 shots, and added two insurance goals four minutes apart to give the Bobcats a commanding 3-0 lead. Nicole Kosta would make it a two-goal game less than six minutes into the final frame with her fourth goal of the season off a dish from Uden Johansson.

Uden Johansson would also set up the final score of the contest 9:16 into the third period when she spotted Felica Vieweg across the ice. Vieweg collected the pass and found Kate Wheeler, who then fired a shot past Drinkwater for her fifth of the season and a 3-0 QU advantage.
