SU Climbs Rankings After Big 2012 Start

Coming off a fast start to the 2012 season, the SU men’s track field team jumped 93 spots up to No. 41 in the United States Track Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Computer Rankings following their record-setting performance at the Cornell Upstate Challenge in Ithaca last weekend.  The Orange is the biggest mover this week and is now also ranked No. 15 in the Northeast region, one of only seven BIG EAST teams ranked.

Leading the way for the Orange is senior Jarret Eaton, who broke the school record of 7.68 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.61, the fastest time in the nation this season.  Eaton set the previous school record in 2010 at the New Balance Invitational.  This outstanding performance secured him an automatic qualification to the BIG EAST, IC4A and NCAA Indoor Championships, and earned him BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week honors.

Junior Amadou Gueye ran the 60-meter hurdles alongside Eaton coming in second place with a time of 8.04 seconds to earn a spot in both the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships as well.  60-meter dash runners Jaquan Holland (6.84) took second and Jihaad Howard (6.96) took fifth to contribute to the increase in overall rankings for the Orange.

This weekend Syracuse will compete in the Penn State National Invitational in State College, Pa. which will include more than 30 teams featuring over 1,000 student-athletes, the Boston University Terrier Invitational in Boston, Mass. and the Class of ’32 Invitational in Hamilton.
