Women’s Hoops At Seton Hall Sunday
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team (12-7, 1-4 BIG EAST) heads to South Orange, N.J. this weekend to face Seton Hall (7-12, 0-5) in a BIG EAST conference game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Walsh Gymnasium.
• The contest can be heard live on SU’s flagship station ESPN 97.7 FM/1200 AM and on Orange All-Access with Brian Higgins ‘04 on the call. SERIES HISTORY
• This will be the 52nd meeting all-time between Syracuse and Seton Hall with the Pirates holding a 28-23 edge in the series.
• The Orange has won the last four meetings, two each over the previous two seasons, by an average of almost 30 points per game.
• In the last meeting, Iasia Hemingway scored 17 points to lead SU to a 74-44 victory over the Pirates in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on March, 4, 2011. Kayla Alexander added 16, Erica Morrow tallied 12 and Carmen Tyson-Thomas had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
• Almost two months earlier, on Jan. 8 at the Carrier Dome, Elashier Hall led five SU players in double figures as the Orange topped Seton Hall, 75-50. Shakeya Leary grabbed a career-high 19 boards.
• The last time the teams met in South Orange, the team in Orange came away with a 79-38 victory on Jan. 5, 2010. Alexander scored 18 points as SU recorded its largest margin of victory ever in a BIG EAST game (41 points).
• Seton Halls last win in the series was on Jan. 13, 2009 at the Carrier Dome, 70-66.
SCOUTING SETON HALL
• The Pirates are 7-12 overall and 0-5 in the BIG EAST. SHU is coming off a 68-49 loss at home to USF on Jan. 14.
• After getting off to a 7-5 start, Seton Hall has lost seven in a row dating back to a Dec. 17 win vs. Stony Brook.
• West Virginia is the lone common opponent between the two teams. The Orange lost to the Mountaineers, 76-72 on Dec. 7, while the Pirates lost at WVU, 79-63, on Jan. 10.
• Jasmine Crew leads the Pirates and ranks third in the conference in scoring at 19.1 points per game. She has a conference-leading 114 free throws on 133 attempts, the second-best percentage (.857) behind Carmen Tyson-Thomas (.896).
• Brittany Morris is the top outside shooting threat with 39 3-pointers in 105 attempts (.371) and averages 12.6 points per game.
• Anne Donovan (Old Dominion ‘83) is in her second season at the helm in South Orange. The Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist led the Pirates to an 8-21 record and 1-15 mark in BIG EAST play.
LAST TIME OUT
• No. 18/17 Georgetown (14-4, 3-2) turned 31 SU turnovers into 38 points and used a 41-13 halftime lead to down Syracuse on Sunday at McDonough Arena, 69-42.
• Kayla Alexander led the Orange with 13 points and added 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, and Iasia Hemingway registered 14 points (12 in the second half).
• After shooting 13.8 percent from the floor, the Orange picked up the tempo in the second half on 11-of-30 shooting from the floor. Georgetown was 25-of-57 (44%) for the game, including 12-of-25 from beyond the arc.
• The Hoyas never trailed in the game, and had three players score in double figures, led by 23 from Sugar Rodgers. Tia Magee added 11 points (all in the first half) and a game-high six steals, while Rubylee Wright contributed 15.
HEMINGWAY HONORED BY CONFERENCE
• Senior forward Iasia Hemingway was named to the BIG EAST’s Women’s Basketball Honor Roll two weeks in a row, on Jan. 2 and Jan. 9.
• Hemingway averaged 23.5 points and 7.0 rebounds as the Orange went 1-1 in a pair of conference road games two weeks ago. She led SU in scoring in both games.
• She poured in a career-high 33 points and grabbed eight boards in SU’s 83-60 victory at Pittsburgh on Jan. 7. Hemingway went 15-of-16 at the line, setting the Syracuse school record and the Peterson Events Center facility record for free throws made.
• Hemingway received the same honor the previous week after averaging 23.5 points in a pair of 51-point victories at home vs. Niagara and Colgate.
DOMINATING THE GLASS
• Dominant rebounding has become the norm for the Orange in recent years. As of the last NCAA stats update on Monday, Syracuse led the NCAA in rebounding, averaging 49.3 per game and ranked sixth in margin at +12.7 per game.
• In the BIG EAST, SU leads the conference in rebounds per game (49.3), offensive rebounds (22.0) and rebounding margin (+12.7), while ranking second in defensive rebounds (27.3) this season.
• SU has four of the top 20 rebounders in the BIG EAST (8. Carmen Tyson-Thomas, 7.8; 9. Kayla Alexander, 7.7; 15. Iasia Hemingway, 6.8; and 19. Shakeya Leary, 6.4.
• Syracuse led the NCAA in rebounding margin last season at +13.4 per game. SU outrebounded 31 of its 35 opponents.
STRONG AT THE STRIPE
• An aggressive, attacking style of offense results in the Orange ranking second in the NCAA in free throws made (360) and attempted (479).
• Syracuse is second in the BIG EAST in free throw shooting percentage at .752.
• Carmen Tyson-Thomas has the best percentage at the charity stripe in the conference (.896).
• On Jan. 7 at Pitt, The Orange went 34-of-38 (.895) at the line, including Iasia Hemingway setting a school record with 15 free throws in 16 attempts.
ALEXANDER CONTROLS THE POST
• Junior center Kayla Alexander is the Orange’s second-leading scorer (15.4 ppg.) and rebounder (7.7 rpg.) this season. She ranks eighth in the BIG EAST in scoring and ninth in rebounding, while leading the conference in blocked shots (49 total, 2.6 per game).
• Alexander is fourth on Syracuse’s career blocked shot list with 210. Chris Palombi (1981-84) ranks third with 217.
• Alexander scored a career-high 33 points against Binghamton on Nov. 26, giving her 1,008 points in her career. She becomes the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points in her career and the first since Erica Morrow accomplished the feat in 2009-10.
• Alexander was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for her performance in Syracuse’s first three games of the season. She averaged 18.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in the three contests.
• Alexander is fourth on SU’s career free throws made list at 340. Next up is Julie McBride (2001-04) with 348.
HEMINGWAY SPARKS ORANGE
• Senior Iasia Hemingway has reached double figures in scoring in 15 of 19 games this season and reached the 30-point mark three times. She leads the team in scoring (16.0 ppg), ranking sixth in the BIG EAST, and averages 6.8 rebounds.
• She scored a career-high 33 points, including a school-record 15 free throws in 16 attempts, in a win at Pitt (1/7).
• She set a then-career-high with 31 points to go along with 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season vs. Colgate on Dec. 31.
• Hemingway played the first two years of her career at Georgia Tech before transfering to SU. She has scored 1,374 points in her career, 749 of them wearing Orange.
TYSON-THOMAS MAKES IMPACT
• Junior Carmen Tyson-Thomas ranks third on the team in scoring (11.7 ppg.) and leads the club in rebounding (7.8 rpg) this season.
• She had a streak of three-straight double-doubles (12/29, 12/31, 1/3) and had scored in double figures in five-straight. She has five double-doubles on the season and 14 in her career.
• The versatile swing-player has set career-highs in scoring in twice this season. Tyson-Thomas scored a career-high 21 points in SU’s win against Lafayette. She improved on that performance in Syracuse’s win against Buffalo, scoring a team-high 23 points. Since then she has posted 22 points against Ohio (12/20).
• She leads the BIG EAST in free throw shooting percentage at .896 (43-48), ranks third in offensive rebounds per game (3.6), and eighth in total rebounds per game (7.8).
‘PACK THE HOUSE’ VS. UCONN
• It will be “Pack the House” night at the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when the Syracuse women’s basketball team hosts No. 3 Connecticut in a 7 p.m. game on $2 Ticket Night, powered by National Grid.
• Two-dollar admission is just one of the many offers and promotions occurring when the Orange and seven-time National Champion Huskies square off. It will be National Girls Women in Sports Day, featuring many of the SU women’s athletic teams and allowing fans the chance to meet some of their favorite SU student-athletes.
